Tropical Cyclone Jude has resulted in nine deaths across Mozambique and Malawi. In Mozambique, six people died and thousands were displaced. Malawi reported three fatalities and extensive homelessness. Relief efforts are hindered due to damage to infrastructure, following a previous cyclone in December 2022.
Tropical Cyclone Jude has caused significant devastation in Mozambique and Malawi, claiming at least nine lives. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Mozambique reported six fatalities, 20 injuries, and the displacement of 9,525 individuals across Nampula, Niasa, and Zambezia provinces.
In Malawi, the cyclone resulted in three deaths and left approximately 20,000 people homeless in the southern region due to extensive flooding. Chiphiliro Khamula, a spokesperson for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Malawi, indicated that those displaced are currently being accommodated in evacuation centers.
The cyclone made landfall in northern Mozambique on Sunday and subsequently affected southern Malawi, with flooding concerns persisting from Monday to Wednesday. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has noted that relief operations are facing challenges due to washed-away roads and bridges, complicating access to affected areas.
This disaster follows another severe event last December, when Cyclone Chido impacted the same regions, resulting in 73 deaths in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi.
Tropical Cyclone Jude has led to nine confirmed fatalities, widespread displacement, and severe flooding in both Mozambique and Malawi. The cyclone’s impact included significant challenges for disaster relief efforts due to infrastructure damage. As the region continues to recover from this disaster, previous cyclones highlight the ongoing vulnerability to such natural events.
