Nepal’s Women’s Cricket Team Struggles in Uganda Series

Nepal’s women’s cricket team, ranked third in ICC T20I rankings, struggled in Uganda, ending with four losses in five matches. Despite hopes for success, they recorded their third lowest T20I score at 51 runs against Uganda. Captain Indu Barma expressed responsibility for the team’s poor performance. Nepal now faces Hong Kong in their final league match, with limited chances of advancing in the tournament.

Nepal’s women’s cricket team aimed for the quadrangular series title in Uganda but faced setbacks, finishing with four losses out of five matches. Head coach Manoj Katwal expressed confidence ahead of the series, ranking Nepal as the third-best team among Uganda, Hong Kong, and Namibia based on the ICC Women’s T20I rankings.

Despite high hopes, Nepal’s performance declined, particularly in a match against Uganda where they lost by 40 runs. This defeat marked their third lowest score in T20I history at just 51 runs, with the lowest previously recorded being 50 in 2019 and 2023 matches against Bangladesh and Malaysia, respectively.

Captain Indu Barma acknowledged the team did not play well, stating, “We did not play our best cricket, and I did not take the responsibility from the front.” Only Barma and Kabita Joshi managed to score in double figures, illustrating the team’s struggles with batting.

In their upcoming final league-stage game against Hong Kong, Nepal’s chances of progressing are slim. Hong Kong, needing a win to qualify for the finals, holds an edge, while Namibia and Uganda also compete on the same day, each seeking to solidify their positions with six points earned in the league tournament so far.

Nepal’s women’s cricket team faced significant challenges in Uganda, resulting in multiple defeats despite being positioned as a strong contender. With only one win against Uganda earlier in the series, the team needs to reassess their tactics moving forward. Captain Indu Barma’s concerns highlight the need for improved execution in both batting and overall team strategy as they prepare for their final match against Hong Kong.
