Team Uganda includes skilled players and juniors, readying for a competitive week. Meanwhile, Team Kenya, led by John Lejirma, features elite amateur golfers aiming to defend their title. The annual tournament is a key event promoting East African golf.
The Ugandan golf team is enthusiastically preparing to face Kenya at the upcoming Victoria Cup tournament, following their recent flag-off by NCS’s Sarah Chelangat. This annual event, marked by fierce competition, pits the two East African nations against each other, with Kenya currently holding the title after a draw last year at Kitante. The tournament will take place at the new Mt. Kipipiri Golf and Resort in Naivasha, where both teams aim to secure victory.
Team Uganda will be led by seasoned captain Joseph Cwinya-ai, featuring a group of ten skilled golfers including Joseph Reagan Akena and Elton Thembo. The squad also comprises junior players Peter Mayende, Anthony Otukei, and Ibrahim Ssemakula. To prepare, the team will acclimatize for a week before the competition starts on March 20, with three members already participating in the Kenya Amateur Golf series.
During the flag-off event, Chelangat expressed her confidence in the Ugandan players, noting their talent and determination. Highlighting the government’s support, she mentioned the Minister’s interest in the ongoing rivalry with Kenya. Team manager Paul Habyarimana and national coach Flavia Namakula will accompany the team, which departs for Kipipiri on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Kenya Golf Union has unveiled its lineup, spearheaded by captain John Lejirma. The team includes elite players from various clubs, all of whom have undergone rigorous training in preparation for the championship. Chris Kinuthia, vice-chairman of the Kenya Golf Union, emphasized the quality and readiness of his team as they seek to defend their title.
The Victoria Cup has become a significant event since its inception in 2016, showcasing the competitive golf culture in East Africa. The Mt. Kipipiri Golf and Resort, designed to international standards, offers a par 72 course set in a stunning environment, ensuring a thrilling experience for golfers. A subsidiary event will also be held on March 22, allowing local golfers to join in before the main tournament festivities.
The upcoming Victoria Cup promises to be an exciting showcase of golf as Uganda and Kenya renew their rivalry. With skilled teams prepared for intense competition, both nations aim for victory. The event underscores the growing prominence of golf in East Africa, particularly at the newly established Mt. Kipipiri Golf and Resort, designed for major tournaments. This year’s cup exemplifies dedication, sportsmanship, and the vibrant golf culture in the region.
