Deadly RSF Shelling in El Fasher, Sudan: A Tragic Escalation of Violence

An RSF shelling in El Fasher, Sudan, killed 10 and injured 23, including children. The attack employed 120-mm artillery shells targeting residential areas and shelters. The ongoing conflict has resulted in nearly 30,000 deaths and displaced over 15 million since April 2023.

A recent shelling attack in El Fasher, North Darfur State, resulted in 10 fatalities and 23 injuries, as reported by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeted residential neighborhoods along with a shelter center using 37 120-mm artillery shells. Notably, among the deceased was a 3-year-old girl, while others suffered serious injuries requiring medical care.

In addition to the shelling, the RSF attempted to deploy drones against critical sites in El Fasher. However, the SAF’s air defense mechanism successfully intercepted and downed these drones. Despite the nature of the attack, the RSF has yet to issue any statements regarding the incident, as observed by Xinhua news agency.

El Fasher has witnessed intense conflicts between the SAF and RSF since May 10 of the previous year. This ongoing struggle, which began in mid-April 2023, has led to a staggering death toll of at least 29,683 people according to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data, a monitoring group recognized by the United Nations. Furthermore, the conflict has resulted in the displacement of over 15 million individuals, according to estimates by the International Organization for Migration.

The attack in El Fasher underscores the escalating violence in Sudan due to the conflict between the SAF and RSF. With a significant number of casualties and ongoing displacement, the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate. Efforts for peace and stability are urgently needed to address the devastating impacts on civilians and the broader community.
