Nepal’s Prime Minister Seeks Egypt’s Assistance for Bipin Joshi’s Release

Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli sought Egyptian support for the release of Bipin Joshi, a hostage held by Hamas since October 7, 2023. President Al-Sisi assured prioritization of efforts for Joshi’s release. Both leaders also discussed bilateral relations, multilateral cooperation, and the upcoming Sagarmatha Sambad forum on climate change.

On Wednesday, Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli communicated with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, requesting Egypt’s assistance in securing the release of Bipin Joshi, a Nepalese national held hostage by Hamas since October 7, 2023. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted Oli’s appreciation for Egypt’s mediation role in the Gaza ceasefire and asked Al-Sisi to continue his diplomatic efforts in Joshi’s case.

President Al-Sisi confirmed Egypt’s commitment to prioritize the release of all remaining hostages, including Joshi, as part of the second phase of the hostage exchange process. Joshi, a participant in the “Learn and Earn” agricultural study programme, was abducted from Alumim Kibbutz during the Hamas attack, which resulted in 251 individuals being taken hostage; many have been released, but many remain captive.

In addition to the hostage negotiations, Al-Sisi praised Nepal’s initiative to host the Sagarmatha Sambad and expressed his hopes for its success. Prime Minister Oli extended an invitation for Al-Sisi to participate in this dialogue, scheduled for May 16 to 18 in Kathmandu. The Sagarmatha Sambad aims to address climate change and sustainability with a focus on mountains and humanity’s future, engaging various international stakeholders.

Oli emphasized the necessity of global collaboration to tackle climate-related challenges and expressed confidence that Egypt’s involvement would enrich the discussions. The leaders also addressed issues surrounding bilateral relations, multilateral cooperation, and potential high-level visits.

Nepal is actively pursuing Egypt’s assistance in securing the release of Bipin Joshi, held hostage by Hamas. The exchange of diplomatic discussions highlights the broader scope of cooperation between Nepal and Egypt, including joint efforts on climate change through initiatives like the Sagarmatha Sambad. Both nations are committed to enhancing their diplomatic and cooperative engagements moving forward.
