During the visit, Delmastro signed a Declaration of Intent with the Mexican Ministry of Security and the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (Unicri). This agreement seeks to enhance collaboration in combating organized crime, improving criminal justice and penitentiary systems, and addressing issues of extortion and corruption. Initial discussions occurred during an earlier mission in December 2024 involving both Unicri and Italian Embassy representatives.
“My second mission to Mexico was aimed at agreeing with the new Mexican government authorities on the path to further strengthen cooperation in the fight against organised crime,” Delmastro stated. He emphasized the strong desire among Mexican counterparts to adopt Italy’s proven methodologies from its longstanding battle against mafias. Delmastro characterized Mexico as a reliable partner, committed to safeguarding democracy while engaging in shared initiatives against organized crime.
