CS Justin Muturi confirms that the Democratic Party of Kenya is leaving the Kenya Kwanza Coalition. The party issued a 30-day notice, which does not require his prior approval. The exit is effective immediately and aligns with legal protocols, citing unsatisfactory political conditions.
Public Service CS Justin Muturi has stated that the Democratic Party of Kenya (DP), which he is affiliated with, has issued a notice to exit the Kenya Kwanza Coalition. He clarified that the party does not need to notify him regarding its decision to leave, as it operates independently within its management structure. Muturi emphasized the party’s autonomy in making decisions that serve its best interests.
On Wednesday, the DP submitted a 30-day notice to exit the Kenya Kwanza Alliance, which was confirmed by Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu. Muturi indicated that he became aware of the decision only after the notice had been submitted, acknowledging that it was an authorized decision made by the party’s organ.
Muturi originally entered the Kenya Kwanza alliance as a member of DP following a formal agreement in May 2022. While he was appointed as the party leader in February 2022, he later resigned after being nominated as Attorney General. The notice of exit highlights a shift in the party’s position, citing the current political landscape as untenable for their continued membership in the coalition.
The exit notice, signed by DP Secretary General Dr. Jacob Haji on March 7, states that their exit from the coalition is effective immediately and adheres to the termination clause outlined in their coalition agreement. Furthermore, legal provisions stipulate that the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) must accept the party’s decision to leave, given the issuance of the required 30-day notice.
CS Justin Muturi confirmed that the Democratic Party of Kenya has initiated its exit from the Kenya Kwanza Coalition without prior notification to him. The party’s independence in making this decision reflects its management structure’s capabilities. Their departure, formalized by a 30-day notice, stems from current political challenges, adhering to legal requirements for leaving such coalitions.
