On March 13, Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar welcomed Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos in Jerusalem, marking Timotheos’s inaugural visit to Israel. The two dignitaries engaged in a private discussion followed by an expanded bilateral dialogue aimed at enhancing diplomatic relations across various sectors. Sa’ar noted plans for a reciprocal visit to Ethiopia, indicating ongoing commitment to partnership.

In his statements to the press, Sa’ar emphasized the importance of strengthening ties with African nations as part of a strategic initiative for 2025. He highlighted Ethiopia’s pivotal role in this mission, stating, “Today’s visit is the first as part of an initiative that I am leading to strengthen ties with African countries.” Furthermore, he underscored Ethiopia’s vital involvement in countering terrorism, specifically regarding the militant group Al-Shabaab, which jeopardizes stability in the Horn of Africa.

Sa’ar expressed concern over regional security breaches linked to terrorism, stating, “Terrorism is a common threat to our people.” He pointed out the collaboration between Al-Shabaab and Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen, which endangers peace in the region and has led to missile attacks on Israeli territories. Sa’ar reiterated the threats posed by radical Islamic groups, commenting, “We are witnessing radical Islamic terrorism in our regions. Terrorism must be eradicated.”

The meeting between Israel’s and Ethiopia’s Foreign Ministers signifies a focus on deeper diplomatic relations, with plans for future collaboration and reciprocal visits. With shared interests in combating terrorism, particularly Al-Shabaab, both nations are strategically aligning their efforts to promote regional stability and security.
