The Lake Chad region is facing a serious humanitarian crisis characterized by intertwined risks of conflict and fragility. The impacts of climate change, such as rising temperatures and erratic rainfall, exacerbate existing political, environmental, economic, and security challenges. These changes hinder local communities’ ability to maintain their livelihoods and amplify vulnerabilities amid ongoing violence from armed groups, which also undermines traditional resilience strategies. This article presents findings from a climate-security nexus assessment conducted to guide response options, rooted in extensive local research.
Through a participatory conflict analysis approach, this assessment is underpinned by 229 one-on-one interviews with community members conducted by a local research team across Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria. This analysis aims to evaluate the relationship between climate change and conflict in the Lake Chad region systematically. The study identifies four primary climate-fragility risks: (i) climate change contributes to greater livelihood insecurity; (ii) increased vulnerability emerges due to conflict and instability; (iii) resource-related conflicts escalate amidst scarcity; and (iv) livelihood hardships drive recruitment into armed factions.
In summary, effective stabilization efforts in the Lake Chad region must address the intersecting risks posed by climate change. These climate-security interactions fundamentally shape the risk landscape, necessitating strategic and informed responses to mitigate both immediate conflict and longer-term climate impacts. Failing to integrate climate considerations into conflict resolution could hinder peace and security initiatives across the region.
