Zimbabwe is pursuing membership in BRICS to enhance trade and economic growth, as stated by Foreign Minister Amon Murwira during discussions with Russian officials. The initiative, led by President Mnangagwa, aims to foster economic cooperation, highlighting education and technological advancements as key drivers for development.
Zimbabwe is actively seeking to join the BRICS economic bloc as part of its strategy to improve trade and spur economic growth. Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Professor Amon Murwira, outlined this strategy during discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow. He emphasized that Zimbabwe’s bid to join BRICS is primarily based on economic motivations, rather than political alignments.
During the meeting, Professor Murwira remarked, “We discussed joining economic groupings, and one of the economic groupings is BRICS, which is basically made up of the Russian Federation, India, China, Brazil, South Africa, plus other countries that have recently joined.” He further noted that trade among nations is vital for economic growth, stating, “we believe that for Zimbabwe to grow, it needs to be in a grouping of countries that trade together because trade grows economies.”
The pursuit of BRICS membership is directed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, as highlighted by Professor Murwira. He stated, “We are actually taking steps to join BRICS under the direction of President Mnangagwa. So we are on the way to do that, and we are doing that in order to grow our economy.” He asserts that economic development is crucial for peace, linking this to Zimbabwe’s desire to join BRICS.
Additionally, Professor Murwira underlined the significance of innovation and education in promoting economic development. He stated, “So, what we have done with the Russian Federation and many other countries is to coalesce around the idea of growing capabilities, and this comes through education, innovation, science, and technology.”
BRICS was initially established by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa to create an alternative economic framework to the dominant U.S.-led global system.
Zimbabwe’s endeavor to join BRICS is driven by the desire for economic collaboration and growth. The engagement with Russia underscores the importance of trade and innovation in fostering economic stability. By aligning with BRICS, Zimbabwe aims to enhance its economic prospects amidst shifting global dynamics.
