India and Mauritius Strengthen Bilateral Relations with Enhanced Strategic Partnership

India and Mauritius have elevated their relationship to an ‘enhanced strategic partnership’ with eight key agreements focusing on trade, maritime cooperation, and mutual security. PM Modi introduced a new vision for regional collaboration called “MAHASAGAR”. This partnership emphasizes local currency transactions and infrastructural and developmental projects to fortify ties further, building upon previous cooperation and historical links.

India and Mauritius have upgraded their relationship to an ‘enhanced strategic partnership’ by signing eight agreements aimed at enhancing collaboration in various areas including trade and maritime security. Prime Minister Narendra Modi articulated a new vision for the Global South named “MAHASAGAR,” focusing on mutual advancement and security. The signed pacts emphasize using national currencies for transactions, data sharing in maritime activities, and joint initiatives against money laundering and support for MSMEs.

During his two-day visit, PM Modi attended Mauritian national day celebrations as the chief guest, which featured participation from Indian armed forces. The event showcased a warship from the Indian Navy and a skydiving team from the Indian Air Force. Modi’s discussions with Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam highlighted mutual priorities like a secure Indian Ocean region and enhanced defense cooperation as essential aspects of both nations’ strategic partnership.

The initiatives reinforce India’s commitment to safeguarding Mauritius’s Exclusive Economic Zone, reaffirming long-standing ties. Modi rolled out his vision for collaboration that builds on the previously established SAGAR policy, which was aimed at regional security and growth. The new approach under MAHASAGAR represents a commitment to sustainable development and shared security through technology and financial support.

India will provide assistance for infrastructural projects like the new Parliament building in Mauritius and support local institutions, including Coast Guard, police academy, and maritime data sharing. The cooperation will extend to areas such as maritime economy, hydrography, and the reconciliation efforts concerning the Chagos Islands dispute with the UK, emphasizing respect for Mauritius’s sovereignty.

In the context of economic ties, PM Modi emphasized existing partnerships in trade and development, citing a proposal to settle transactions in local currencies and highlighting India-assisted infrastructure projects like public services and transportation. The relationship is founded on historical and demographic ties, with Indian descent individuals comprising about 70% of Mauritius’s population. India has maintained its status as one of Mauritius’s leading trading partners since 2005.

The strengthened ties between India and Mauritius, symbolized by the designation of an ‘enhanced strategic partnership’, reveal a mutual commitment to cooperation across multiple sectors including trade, defense, and social development. The new MAHASAGAR vision outlines a collaborative approach for sustainable growth and security in the Indian Ocean region, enhancing the historical relationship fostered by shared cultural heritage and demographic links. These initiatives indicate a proactive approach to addressing regional challenges and fostering long-term synergy.
