In a recent statement, General Tsadkan Gebretensae, Vice President of the Tigray Interim Administration, warned that the likelihood of Ethiopia engaging in a war with Eritrea is high. He emphasized that preparations for conflict are in the “final stages” and proposed that the Tigray region could become a pivotal battleground in this escalation.
Gen. Tsadkan noted the increasing hostility from Eritrea, claiming that war could erupt at any moment. He expressed concerns regarding the potential for conflict to affect not just Ethiopia and Eritrea but also neighboring Sudan and the Red Sea region. Despite Tigray’s desire for peace, he acknowledged that the options for resolution seem to be dwindling.
He highlighted the weakening alliance between Ethiopia and Eritrea post-Pretoria agreement, which previously helped reduce hostilities in the Tigray region. Tsadkan warned that once preparations for conflict reach a critical stage, controlling the situation would become significantly more difficult.
The general accused Eritrea of pursuing predatory policies and exploiting surrounding nations, viewing Tigray as an obstacle to its ambitions. He suggested that Eritrea’s President Isaias Afwerki is frustrated by the Pretoria agreement and is attempting to align with certain factions within the TPLF to safeguard their interests.
Mulatu Teshome, former Ethiopian President, echoed these sentiments, alleging that Isaias is seeking to exploit TPLF divisions to undermine peace efforts. Last month, he cautioned that Isaias’s maneuvers could reignite violence in northern Ethiopia. He also accused Eritrea of fostering instability through support for TPLF divisions and militia formations in the Amhara state.
Eritrea, however, has dismissed these accusations as unfounded. Minister of Information Yemane G. Meskel condemned the claims of military involvement as an attempt to push a “war-mongering agenda” and asserted that the problems faced in the region stem from Ethiopia’s internal issues, rejecting any notion of external interference.
General Tsadkan’s warning highlights the precarious situation between Ethiopia and Eritrea, suggesting an imminent threat of war as preparations finalize. He indicates that Eritrean actions are motivated by predation and dissatisfaction with peace agreements, while former officials reinforce these concerns by detailing Eritrean interference in Ethiopian politics.
