The Namibia Revenue Agency (NamRA) has successfully generated N$3.4 million in revenue through its whistleblower hotline, demonstrating the initiative’s effectiveness in deterring tax evasion and illegal activities. Operational since May 2024, the hotline, overseen by Deloitte Namibia, plays a crucial role in fostering transparency and accountability in tax administration.
To date, the hotline has received 60 reports addressing various serious issues, including fraud, corruption, tax evasion, money laundering allegations, drug smuggling, and unethical conduct. According to Yarukeekuro Steven Ndorokaze, NamRA’s chief strategic communications, this initiative has contributed to a total of N$15.8 million raised in assessments, with N$3.4 million recovered from three companies in November and December 2024 alone.
“This milestone underscores the hotline’s effectiveness in serving as a platform for promoting compliance, ethical governance and responsible tax administration,” Ndorokaze stated. He emphasized that NamRA is committed to enhancing tax compliance and encourages taxpayers and stakeholders to utilize the whistleblower hotline actively.
Ndorokaze highlighted the public’s essential role in maintaining integrity and accountability within Namibia’s tax system by reporting suspicious activities. To protect whistleblowers, every report is handled with utmost confidentiality, allowing anonymous reporting through multiple channels: Toll-free: 0800 535 777, Email: [email protected], and Website: www.tip-offs.com.
The NamRA’s whistleblower initiative has effectively facilitated the recovery of revenue while promoting a culture of transparency and accountability in Namibia’s tax system. As it stands, the program has garnered significant reports addressing various illegal activities, underscoring the importance of public participation in maintaining tax integrity. With protective measures in place for whistleblowers, the initiative encourages a proactive approach to reporting suspicious activities.
