The Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba Freeway: A Milestone for Namibia’s Growth

The Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba Freeway officially opened, cementing Namibia’s path toward economic development and regional integration. This 42 km stretch links Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, supports job creation, and aligns with national logistics goals. Further phases and improvements are planned to continue this momentum.

The Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba Freeway has been officially opened, symbolizing Namibia’s commitment to economic development and integration. President Nangolo Mbumba highlighted that this freeway represents a significant milestone for the nation, allowing it to take pride in its journey towards prosperity. The freeway connects Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, enhancing transport links in the region while aligning with the country’s goal of becoming a logistics hub.

This 42 km strategic roadway plays a vital role in linking Namibia with neighboring countries through essential transport corridors. These corridors, including the Trans-Kalahari and Walvis Bay-Ndola-Lubumbashi Development Corridors, facilitate trade and economic cooperation within the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The enhancement of these regions is crucial for Namibia’s economic aspirations.

The project contributed significantly to job creation, generating approximately 650 local jobs during its construction. A total of N$200 million was allocated to local suppliers and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), with N$150 million spent on local suppliers and N$50 million on SMEs. This indicates a commitment to local economic support and development.

Phase 2 of the freeway project is in progress, which will extend the dual carriageway and improve access to the Walvis Bay traffic circle, with expected completion by mid-2025. There are also plans to rehabilitate another important road, transforming Main Road 54 into a dual carriageway by April 2026.

The successful implementation of this project is credited to the Roads Authority, the main contractor UNIK/Thohi Joint Venture, and the consulting firm SMEC Namibia. The completion of the Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba Freeway not only marks a significant infrastructure achievement but also renews the commitment to economic growth and integration within the region as envisioned by the founding leaders of Namibia.

In conclusion, the Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba Freeway signifies Namibia’s ongoing journey towards economic growth and regional cohesion. As the nation celebrates this infrastructure advancement, it also honors the vision laid out by its founding leaders. The freeway represents both a literal and metaphorical road to prosperity, facilitating vital connections for trade and job creation, reinforcing the commitment to a united and thriving Namibia.
