EU Supports Arab-Led Egyptian Plan for Gaza Reconstruction

The EU, led by Kaja Kallas, supports the Egyptian Recovery and Reconstruction plan for Gaza, emphasizing the need for a secure framework ensuring peace for Israelis and Palestinians. The EU aims to prevent Hamas’s influence in Gaza’s future and commit to aiding the Palestinian Authority as it reassumes governance. The $53 billion initiative, supported by Arab leaders, aims to reconstruct Gaza over five years while ensuring residents remain on their land.

The European Union (EU), represented by High Representative Kaja Kallas, has expressed strong support for the Arab Recovery and Reconstruction plan developed by Egypt during an extraordinary summit in Cairo. Kallas described the plan as serious and significant for discussions regarding Gaza’s future, stating that the EU aims to collaborate with Arab partners on these proposals during the annual UN Security Council session focused on EU-UN cooperation.

The EU acknowledged the Arab-backed plan, emphasizing that proper recovery and reconstruction efforts must establish a solid political and security framework to ensure peace for both Israelis and Palestinians. Kallas reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to support a future Palestinian state, including Gaza, while working collaboratively with the international community on its reconstruction.

In its statement, the EU also underscored its resolve to prevent Hamas from playing a role in Gaza’s future governance, ensuring it ceases to pose a threat to Israel. Plans for ongoing political and financial backing to the Palestinian Authority (PA) were confirmed, aimed at facilitating the PA’s return to governance in Gaza.

The Arab leaders embraced the $53 billion reconstruction plan on March 4, which spans five years and ensures that Gazans remain on their land. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas confirmed the PA’s intent to regain control over Gaza as part of this initiative. Additionally, the plan serves as a counterpoint to a proposal from former President Donald Trump, which suggested transforming Gaza into a luxurious destination.

The EU reiterates its commitment to support the Egyptian-led plan for Gaza’s reconstruction, emphasizing the need for a secure political framework that supports peace for both the Palestinians and Israelis. With intentions to ensure Hamas does not govern Gaza, the EU pledges to assist the Palestinian Authority in returning to power and facilitating the reconstruction efforts outlined in the Arab-backed initiative. This plan represents a significant investment in Gaza’s future with the goal of a sustainable recovery.
