The GJA and GNA convened to strengthen the operations and address challenges of the GNA, emphasizing the necessity of a well-resourced agency for credible journalism in Ghana. GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour highlighted the importance of media advocacy, while GNA’s General Manager Albert Kofi Owusu called for government recapitalization. Both organizations showcased commitment to improving journalists’ welfare and upholding professionalism.
On March 12, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) met with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) leadership to enhance the Agency’s operations and confront its challenges. Held at GNA’s Accra headquarters, the meeting emphasized the significance of a robust national news agency in supporting journalism and facilitating credible news in Ghana.
Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, GJA President, affirmed the Association’s dedication to advocating media institutions, highlighting their impact on journalists’ welfare and public information quality. He acknowledged GNA’s contributions to the journalism field and stated the need for a well-supported GNA for democracy and national development.
The GJA President assured journalists of their ongoing support for improved working conditions and remuneration. GNA’s General Manager, Albert Kofi Owusu, urged the Government to recapitalize the Agency to bolster its efficiency amid funding challenges, stating that inadequate resources led to high attrition rates due to poor remuneration.
Despite facing difficulties, Mr. Owusu reaffirmed GNA’s commitment to professionalism and ethical journalism. He expressed confidence in the credibility of GNA’s news stories, asserting that their journalists strive to maintain high standards, making GNA a trustworthy news source. Established in March 1957, GNA is Ghana’s first state-owned wire service, remaining a key player in credible journalism by disseminating news across local and international platforms.
The GJA delegation included Kofi Yeboah, Audrey Dekalu, and Dominic Hlordzi, while the GNA team featured Beatrice Asamani Savage, Joseph Baffoe, Norbert Asenso, Agnes Boye-Doe, Kenneth Sackey, Felix Attukwei Quaye, and Jonas Eshun, showcasing collaborative efforts to strengthen media operations in Ghana.
The meeting between the GJA and GNA highlights the critical need for a well-resourced national news agency to support credible journalism in Ghana. Advocating for better welfare, remuneration, and operational funding remains a priority for both organizations. The commitment to professionalism within GNA is pivotal for sustaining its reputation as a reliable news source. Overall, strengthening media operations is integral to enhancing democracy and effective news dissemination.
