The Nigerian House of Representatives has ordered the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to block all pornographic websites in the country. This directive mandates internet service providers to immediately restrict access to such content, aiming to tackle the issue of cyber pornography that is perceived as a global concern.
Dalhatu Tafoki, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker from Katsina State, proposed the motion. During the discussion, Tafoki emphasized that Nigeria, being a “highly religious country,” has not sufficiently addressed the growing problem of pornography, which contradicts the teachings of major faiths.
Tafoki also pointed out that numerous countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have implemented legislative measures banning pornography. His argument was reinforced by citing warnings from psychologists about the detrimental effects of pornography, including issues like adultery, prostitution, and addiction.
“Renowned psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued stern warnings on the psychological, sociological and mental consequences of viewing pornographic content,” stated Tafoki. Following the deliberation, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas conducted a voice vote where the majority of lawmakers supported the motion.
The House directed the NCC to enforce penalties on internet service providers that fail to comply with this mandate, indicating a zero-tolerance approach towards online pornography in the country.
