On March 11, the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Navinchandra Ramgoolam, conferred the highest honor, The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean, to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This accolade is historic as Modi is the first Indian recipient of this prestigious award, marking his 21st international award from various countries.
PM Ramgoolam expressed that the honor is fitting for Modi, referencing the significance of the award. He noted, “Since we became a Republic, only five foreign dignitaries have received that title, among them is the Gandhi of Africa, Nelson Mandela, who received it in 1998.”
The award announcement took place at an event celebrating the Indian community, where the national anthems of both India and Mauritius were played, attended by PM Modi and PM Ramgoolam. Modi’s trip to Mauritius was highlighted by his participation as Chief Guest at the Mauritius National Day celebrations, emphasizing the strong cultural and diplomatic connections between India and Mauritius.
During his visit, PM Modi presented OCI Cards to the President and First Lady of Mauritius. He brought gifts including holy Sangam water from Mahakumbh in a brass and copper pot, along with superfood Makhana, and a Banarasi Saree presented to the First Lady in a Sadeli box.
