Onanuga responded to CBCN President Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru’s remarks at a plenary meeting in Abuja, where concerns about unemployment, insecurity, poverty, and corruption were raised. He emphasized the administration’s appreciation for the bishops’ contributions to governance and national unity.
He claimed that security had improved, stating, “Nigeria is more secure today than it was in 2023.” He attributed this progress to the military and security agencies, noting the elimination of over 8,000 criminals and the rescue of 10,000 Nigerians, primarily women and children. This improvement, he suggested, has allowed farmers to return to agriculture, enhancing food production and reducing commodity prices.
Regarding economic performance, Onanuga reported positive developments, including improved balance of trade, strengthened foreign reserves, and stabilizing inflation. He mentioned local refinery advancements, such as those from Dangote Refinery and NNPCL, which are boosting Nigeria’s oil production capacity.
The government has introduced several initiatives to foster job creation and empower youth, including programs like 3MTT, NATEP, and the Nigerian Youth Investment Fund, projected to create over 10 million jobs. Investments in education, healthcare, and infrastructure were also emphasized, with a notable reference to the N54.9 trillion 2025 budget aimed at revitalizing the economy.
International endorsements, such as those from Chatham House, have commended Nigeria’s economic competitiveness, highlighting reforms under Tinubu. While recognizing continuing economic struggles for many Nigerians, Onanuga insisted that the administration is making prudent decisions for potential improvements in the future, stating, “President Tinubu and his team will continue to work very hard to deliver the promise of a greater and stronger Nigeria.”
