The Namibia School of Diplomatic Studies has graduated its first cohort, highlighting the importance of diplomacy in enhancing Namibia’s international relations. Minister Peya Mushelenga underscored the need for adaptable training and commended the high pass rate of graduates, positioning the NSDS as a leading institution in diplomatic education.
The Namibia School of Diplomatic Studies (NSDS), established through a collaboration between the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation and the University of Namibia, aims to enhance the nation’s diplomatic workforce. The school recently celebrated its inaugural graduating class, marking a significant step towards bolstering Namibia’s diplomatic presence.
Peya Mushelenga, the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, emphasized the critical role of diplomacy in promoting the country’s foreign policies and global stature during the graduation ceremony. He highlighted that diplomatic academies have been pivotal in forming global diplomatic practices for over two centuries, starting with the Vienna Diplomatic Academy in 1754.
Mushelenga pointed out that these institutions equip students with essential negotiation skills, enabling them to perform informed political and economic analyses. He noted that the NSDS adheres to this tradition by merging theoretical education with practical training, thereby fostering a professional approach to diplomatic careers.
Commending the school, Mushelenga remarked on the valuable contribution of seasoned diplomats serving as instructors at NSDS, who bring invaluable experience from their previous roles as heads of missions. This brings a wealth of knowledge that greatly benefits the institution.
He further highlighted Namibia’s involvement in multilateral diplomacy, mentioning its recent role on the African Union Peace and Security Council and the contributions of its Permanent Representative to the United Nations. He cited Ambassador Neville Gertze’s leadership in negotiating a significant United Nations initiative, reinforcing Namibia’s commitment to sustainable global development.
Recognizing that diplomacy is dynamic and constantly changing, Mushelenga stressed the need for training institutions like NSDS to remain adaptable. He encouraged the school to personalize its curriculum for various stages of diplomatic careers while maintaining rigorous academic standards, and to consider joining the International Forum on Diplomatic Training.
Mushelenga acknowledged the graduates’ dedication, revealing that the school achieved an impressive 92% pass rate across its three intakes, comparable to elite institutions such as the Diplo Academy in Malta. He urged graduates to use their new skills to enhance Namibia’s diplomatic efforts and output in their respective roles.
