US President Donald Trump has announced a significant reduction in funding through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), eliminating 83% of its programs. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed this decision on X, emphasizing that this will negatively impact nations like Pakistan and Bangladesh, which received millions annually from USAID.
According to Rubio, after a six-week review, the decision was made to scrap a large number of contracts due to their lack of alignment with America’s core national interests, stating that funds were even used to undermine U.S. interests. While some programs will continue, he noted that only 18% of the previous funding levels would be maintained, which will support nearly 1,000 initiatives that provide mutual benefits.
The review led by the Department of Government Operations and Efficiency (DOGE) has highlighted several financial inefficiencies. Previously, Bangladesh received $440 million, Pakistan $231 million, and Sri Lanka $123 million through USAID. The cessation of funds has already affected various ongoing projects in these countries, many of which were purportedly directed towards anti-India efforts in Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The U.S. government’s drastic cut in USAID funding will have substantial effects on Pakistan and Bangladesh, as both countries relied heavily on American financial support for numerous projects.
