Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commenced a two-day State visit to Mauritius, departing late Monday night. As the Chief Guest, he will participate in National Day celebrations on March 12, with the Ministry of External Affairs highlighting the aim of strengthening India-Mauritius ties. The visit underscores mutual interests in security and development within the Indian Ocean Region.
In his departure statement, PM Modi expressed eagerness to engage with Mauritian leadership, underlining Mauritius as a key partner and maritime neighbor. He emphasized the historical, geographical, and cultural connections that fortify the relationship between the nations, stating, “We are connected by history, geography and culture.”
The Prime Minister noted the strong connection between the peoples of both countries, citing shared democratic values and diversity as strengths. He expressed optimism about building upon past foundations to enhance the bilateral partnership and ensure prosperity and security in the region under the Vision SAGAR initiative.
PM Modi is visiting Mauritius at the invitation of Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam and will meet with various senior dignitaries. He is set to engage with the Indian-origin community and inaugurate facilities constructed with India’s assistance, including the Civil Service College and Area Health Centre, during his visit. Multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are also expected to be signed.
The Ministry of External Affairs noted that India and Mauritius share a profound relationship built on historical and cultural ties. This visit aims to reaffirm commitments and enhance cooperation across various sectors, including maritime security, education, and capacity building.
Indian High Commissioner Anurag Srivastava remarked on the depth of the relationship, describing it as a “strong, robust and multifaceted partnership”. He anticipates significant agreements, particularly in maritime security and capacity development, following the meetings between the two Prime Ministers.
