Albert Ramdin, Suriname’s Foreign Minister, has been elected as OAS’s new secretary general, marking the first Caribbean leader to hold this role. He plans to enhance the organization’s efficiency and support Haiti amid its crisis. Ramdin continues as foreign minister until May 25, 2023, aligning with national elections in Suriname.
Suriname’s Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin has been elected as the new secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), making history as the first Caribbean leader to hold this position. His tenure will extend through 2030, succeeding Uruguayan diplomat Luis Almagro. Ramdin, who is 66 years old, has been the top diplomat of Suriname since 2020 and previously served as OAS assistant secretary general from 2005 to 2015.
Ramdin has emphasized the importance of enhancing the efficiency of the OAS and has called for increased support for Haiti, which is struggling against armed gangs and requires more international aid. Suriname’s government stated, “This is the first time in the history of the OAS that a representative from the Caribbean has been elected Secretary General,” showcasing the significance of this event for the region.
Suriname’s President Chan Santokhi praised Ramdin’s diplomatic skills and described him as a “trusted advisor” with “calm assurance.” Although located on the South American continent, Suriname maintains closer ties with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and has previously challenged U.S. sanctions against Venezuela while backing Guyana in its territorial dispute with Venezuela.
The OAS has recognized representatives from Venezuela’s political opposition, despite the Venezuelan government’s move to withdraw from the organization in 2017. Other CARICOM diplomats are optimistic that Ramdin’s leadership will enhance diversity and representation for smaller Caribbean nations facing pressing issues like high debt, gun crime, and climate change.
Albert Ramdin will continue in his role as foreign minister until May 25, when Almagro’s term concludes, coinciding with upcoming national elections in Suriname.
The election of Albert Ramdin as secretary general of the OAS marks a significant milestone for Caribbean representation within the organization. Ramdin’s priorities include improving organizational efficiency and addressing urgent issues in Haiti. His leadership is seen as an opportunity to amplify the voice of smaller Caribbean nations grappling with socio-economic challenges. As Ramdin transitions into his new role, he will maintain his position as Suriname’s foreign minister until Almagro’s term ends.
