MACC Questions 32 Individuals in Investigation of Former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri

The MACC probes former PM Ismail Sabri, questioning 32 individuals in a money laundering case uncovering over RM170 million. More individuals are to be summoned, with delays in Sabri’s testimony due to health issues. Officials await bank records to further the investigation.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is investigating former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, having questioned 32 individuals in connection with the case. This money laundering inquiry has revealed over RM170 million stored in various currencies and gold across multiple safehouses.

An anonymous source disclosed that 23 more individuals are expected to be called to provide statements, while four who have previously been interviewed will return for further questioning. The MACC has also sought bank records from financial institutions and is currently waiting for their responses.

The agency planned to re-interview Ismail Sabri on March 5, but he was unwell. His appointment was moved to March 7; however, he submitted another medical certificate, extending his leave until March 12. Subsequently, the MACC interviewed his doctor to better understand the severity of his health issues.

On March 1, Ismail Sabri was interviewed for five hours at MACC headquarters about considerable funds used for promotional activities during his tenure from 2021 to 2022. Following this interview, he was hospitalized due to high blood pressure after collapsing at home.

MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has confirmed that Ismail Sabri is a suspect and will need to explain the assets he declared in February.

The MACC continues to investigate former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri, having questioned 32 individuals and uncovering a large sum of money. While awaiting bank records, the agency has faced delays in obtaining Ismail Sabri’s statements due to health issues. He is required to clarify his asset declarations amid ongoing scrutiny.
