On March 5, 2025, IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu voiced concerns regarding escalating tensions and armed conflict in Nasir County, South Sudan. He highlighted that these incidents jeopardize the progress achieved through the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) and threaten the country’s peace efforts.
Dr. Workneh urged all involved parties to practice restraint, reaffirm their commitment to the R-ARCSS, and see dialogue and reconciliation as integral to achieving lasting peace. He called on the Government of South Sudan, local authorities, and stakeholders to intensify efforts toward de-escalation and civilian protection, which is vital for regional stability.
In light of the situation, IGAD plans to send a high-level delegation to assess conditions in the area and discuss necessary measures with the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) to restore calm and facilitate the peace process.
As the guarantor of the R-ARCSS, IGAD emphasized its unwavering dedication to the agreement’s full implementation and its collaboration with regional and international partners to promote peace and security in South Sudan.
