The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has voiced deep concern over the ongoing hunger and insecurity in the country, indicating that the national future looks bleak despite some advancements. The bishops cautioned against human rights abuses, injustice, and corruption, warning leaders against provoking unrest among the populace. In their plenary meeting, CBCN President Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji highlighted issues such as worsening socio-economic conditions, rising youth unemployment, and the plight of correctional centers.
Archbishop Ugorji criticized the economic reforms initiated by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, noting they have significantly increased inflation, weakened purchasing power, and led millions into poverty. He cited a World Bank report indicating that approximately 129 million Nigerians live below the poverty line, alongside alarming statistics from the 2024 Global Report on Food Crisis declaring Nigeria second globally for acute food insecurity.
On the matter of security, Ugorji expressed concern over communities suffering from terror, displacement, and impoverishment as criminal groups take control of their homes. He stressed the need for the government to enhance technological deployment in supporting security efforts against crime.
Additionally, the discussion included rising youth unemployment, affecting 70% of the population, emphasizing the necessity for good governance grounded in fair elections. Ugorji lamented the treatment of detainees without trial, which undermines legal processes and constitutes rights violations, especially in the dire conditions of correctional centers.
