Ghana Weightlifting Election Halted by National Security Due to Court Order Defiance

National Security halted the Ghana Weightlifting Federation’s election due to the federation’s defiance of a court injunction. The injunction, requested by Michael Nii Annan Yarboi, cited election malpractices. Despite the court order, the federation planned the election, prompting intervention after a disturbance between candidate supporters.

The Ghana Weightlifting Federation’s elective congress election was halted by National Security officials after the federation disregarded a court injunction. The injunction was sought by former NDC Parliamentary Aspirant, Michael Nii Annan Yarboi, due to alleged election malpractices. Despite being notified of this injunction, the federation proceeded with plans to conduct the election on March 8, 2025, which led to its suspension.

Weightlifter Marie Korkor Agbah-Hughes confirmed that the federation received the injunction, mentioning that it was illegal for the election committee to continue with the election plans. She pointed out that the federation’s board had already completed their term on February 18, yet they attempted to organize the elections anyway.

In the presidential race, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the New Patriotic Party’s Second Deputy Minority Whip, faces off against Michael Nii Yarboi Annan. Tensions escalated at the election venue between their supporters, prompting National Security officials to intervene.

While the identity of who summoned the National Security officers remains unclear, they acted to terminate the election process once order was restored at the venue. This intervention reflects the ongoing issues surrounding governance and the integrity of the electoral process within the Ghana Weightlifting Federation.

The Ghana Weightlifting Federation’s election was suspended due to a court injunction, highlighting legal and governance issues within the organization. Despite a clear directive from the court, the federation attempted to proceed with the election, leading to intervention from national security forces. The conflict amongst candidates and their supporters indicates strained relations within the federation, emphasizing the need for proper adherence to legal frameworks in electoral processes.
