Qatar is pressing for IAEA oversight of Israel’s nuclear facilities amid the ongoing cease-fire negotiations, demanding Israel’s compliance with the NPT. Qatar’s ambassador stressed international action is needed for Israel to follow UN resolutions, while also highlighting humanitarian concerns in Palestine. A memorandum was submitted to the ICJ seeking clarification on Israel’s obligations regarding UN activities.
During the ongoing cease-fire negotiations, Qatar is advocating for increased international accountability regarding Israel’s nuclear facilities. At the IAEA Board of Governors meeting, the Qatari Foreign Ministry urged for Israel to bring its nuclear capabilities under IAEA supervision and join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). This stance comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
Qatar’s ambassador to Austria, Jassim Yacoub Al-Hammadi, emphasized the necessity for international entities to fulfill their commitments under various UN resolutions, particularly those pertaining to the NPT and Israel’s nuclear holdings. He highlighted that Israel has not yet complied with these requests, which include a call to join the NPT as a non-nuclear state.
In his statements, Al-Hammadi noted that all Middle Eastern countries, excluding Israel, are NPT members with effective IAEA safeguard agreements. He accused Israel of pursuing an aggressive policy, referencing actions such as military operations against Palestinians and the disruption of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Moreover, Qatar recently submitted a memorandum to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), requesting an advisory opinion regarding Israel’s responsibilities towards UN operations. This document asserts that Israel must permit the activities of UN and humanitarian organizations in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The memorandum insists on Israel’s responsibility to protect UN property and personnel, including facilities for education and healthcare. Al-Hammadi underscored the urgent need for international intervention to ensure Israel adheres to global resolutions, recognizes Palestinian rights, and promotes stability in the region.
Qatar’s call for IAEA oversight over Israel’s nuclear capabilities is a significant step in increasing international pressure during a crucial time of Middle East instability. The efforts highlight the importance of adherence to international laws and the promotion of peace while safeguarding human rights. Through actions like the memorandum to the ICJ, Qatar aims to hold Israel accountable for its obligations to the UN and the Palestinian people.
