This call was made by Ambassador Jassim Yacoub Al Hammadi during an IAEA Board of Governors session focused on Israel’s nuclear capabilities.
Ambassador Al Hammadi emphasized the necessity for international adherence to United Nations resolutions that call for Israel to comply with the IAEA safeguards. He pointed out that these resolutions have consistently urged Israel to join the NPT, joining other Middle Eastern nations that participate in the treaty and possess safeguard agreements with the IAEA.
Al Hammadi criticized Israel’s aggressive policies, including military actions against Palestinian cities and the blockade of humanitarian assistance to Gaza. He marked that all regional countries, except Israel, have committed to the NPT, which raises concerns about Israel’s nuclear activities in comparison to its neighbors.
In line with these issues, Qatar submitted a memorandum to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) following a UN General Assembly resolution seeking clarification of Israel’s obligations concerning humanitarian operations in occupied territories. The request urges Israel to facilitate the work of the UN and humanitarian agencies and protect their facilities and personnel.
Al Hammadi concluded by highlighting the pressing need for the international community to act decisively to ensure Israel’s compliance with international resolutions, support Palestinian self-determination, and enhance stability in the region to mitigate broader global threats.
