The U.S. is in exploratory talks with the DRC over a deal for critical minerals in exchange for military support, as the DRC holds significant cobalt and other mineral reserves. The United States is engaging in preliminary discussions with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) regarding a potential agreement aimed at securing access to essential minerals in return for military assistance. This comes after a suggestion from the Congolese government which highlighted the U.S. interest in the nation’s mineral wealth following President Felix Tshisekedi’s interview with the New York Times.
The DRC is a major player in the global mineral market, being the largest producer of cobalt, which is crucial for various industrial uses, especially in electric vehicle batteries, contributing to over 70% of worldwide production. Additionally, it harbors considerable gold, copper, tin, lithium, and tantalum reserves.
Currently, vast areas rich in these minerals are controlled by the M23 rebel group, reportedly supported by Rwanda, which is involved in smuggling activities. Discussions regarding a minerals deal with the U.S. could possibly lead to military enhancements for the DRC to help stabilize these regions.
In a communication to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Congolese Senator Pierre Kandi Kalambayi suggested that American companies be granted mining rights in exchange for U.S. military support and training for the DRC’s armed forces. This aligns with U.S. interests in diminishing China’s influence within the DRC’s mining sector.
A State Department representative indicated, “The DRC has a significant share of the world’s most important minerals needed for advanced technologies. The United States is open to discussing partnerships in this sector that align with the ‘America First’ program of the Trump administration.”
The United States is exploring a strategic partnership with the Democratic Republic of Congo to access crucial minerals in exchange for military aid, following Congolese government proposals.
