In a recent event marking the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Conference, President Samia Suluhu Hassan emphasized the renewed focus on enhancing gender equality in Tanzania. She underscored that collective efforts from all Tanzanians are vital to raise a generation that respects mutual values and engages in constructive dialogue.
During her address on March 8, 2025, in Arusha for International Women’s Day, President Hassan noted significant advancements for women in leadership and economic sectors since Beijing. However, she called for investment in youth who can genuinely embrace equality and participate in meaningful discussions rather than merely voicing opinions.
Emphasizing land ownership, President Hassan pointed out its importance for women in achieving parity within society. Additionally, she stated that the government is working towards universal health insurance, aiming to provide all Tanzanians access to healthcare. Her concerns also extended to the perceived decline in moral values among youth, advocating for a focus on nurturing self-reliance and socially acceptable norms beyond ethnicity or religion.
President Hassan affirmed that gender equality should be recognized as a constitutional priority. She referenced the Tanzanian Constitution’s assertion that all individuals are born free and equal, stressing that ensuring rights is a fundamental obligation.
The Minister for Community Development, Gender, and Special Groups, Dr. Dorothy Gwajima, elaborated on this year’s theme: “Women and Girls 2025: Strengthening Rights, Equality, and Economic Empowerment.” This initiative highlights the importance of advancing women’s economic roles across Tanzania, and forums across seven regions are aimed at addressing women’s unique challenges and providing economic empowerment strategies.
Celebrations initiated on March 1, 2025, included platforms for women to display and sell handcrafted items while engaging with successful female figures for inspiration. Dr. Gwajima also mentioned the Samia Legal Aid campaign, showcasing its role in aiding women who have faced violence, with support from legal authorities contributing to their grievances.
Dr. Gwajima further emphasized creating committees focused on women’s education in entrepreneurship to drive the empowerment initiative forward in collaboration with the private sector.
Arusha Regional Commissioner Paul Makonda expressed the success of the event preparations, with numerous booths offering educational, dispute resolution, and trade services. He urged President Hassan to facilitate the establishment of legal aid camps to support citizens with unresolved legal issues due to limited awareness or resources, proposing government-sponsored assistance for legal professionals in this endeavor.
Makonda concluded by expressing confidence that timely interventions can resolve outstanding disputes in the region by September.
