As part of his official tour of the U.K. and Ireland, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar inaugurated a new Consulate in Manchester on March 8, 2025, coinciding with International Women’s Day. At the event, he praised India’s new Consul General, Vishakha Yaduvanshi, and underscored the significance of the moment for India-U.K. relations.
Jaishankar remarked on the transformation of India-U.K. relations, stating, “We are making up for a lot of things perhaps we could have and should have done earlier.” He further emphasized that the inauguration signifies both progress made and a promising future for bilateral ties, anticipating substantial development going forward.
While addressing attendees at the Lancashire Cricket Club, Jaishankar reflected on the historical complexity of India-U.K. relations. He stated, “Every big, deep, important relationship is a mixed one,” advocating for a focus on positive aspects and opportunities while acknowledging existing challenges.
The relationship has faced hurdles, illustrated by a recent incident where a pro-Khalistan protestor confronted Jaishankar in London. In response, the Indian government summoned the U.K. Acting High Commissioner, highlighting ongoing issues in diplomatic interactions. Jaishankar had previously visited in November 2023 to help reset these bilateral ties.
During the consulate inauguration, Jaishankar mentioned efforts towards a free trade agreement (FTA), asserting that current global dynamics favor an enhancement of India-U.K. relations. He indicated that the FTA symbolizes the advancement of their partnership and reflects strong mutual interests.
He encouraged Manchester universities to establish campuses in India, citing the University of Southampton’s initiative to open a Gurugram campus. Furthermore, Jaishankar announced the launch of a Pravasiya Bharatiya Sahayata Kendra (Non-Resident Indian Help Centre) in the U.K., marking a significant support resource for the diaspora.
Additionally, he hinted at the potential introduction of direct flights from Manchester to New Delhi, spurred by Indigo’s plans for a new route to Amsterdam and Manchester starting July 2025, thereby enhancing connectivity between the nations.
