Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mauritius will focus on exchanging several memorandums of understanding (MoUs) particularly on trade and the promotion of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Modi is set to inaugurate the Civil Service College and the Area Health Centre, both established with assistance from India. He will also attend Mauritius’ National Day celebrations as the Chief Guest on March 12, alongside an Indian Defence Forces contingent and an Indian Navy ship.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized the importance of Mauritius as a partner in the Indian Ocean, with deep-rooted bilateral relations grounded in shared history and culture. He recalled that Modi had previously articulated Vision SAGAR (Security and Growth for all in the Region) in Mauritius in 2015, underscoring India’s commitment to the region’s development. The cooperation between India and Mauritius is marked by significant economic development collaborative initiatives and enhancing Mauritius’ defense and maritime capabilities.
Since the elections in November 2024, the newly elected Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam has begun his tenure, marking the first world leader to congratulate him. Misri noted that Modi’s visit comes at a strategic point, allowing the leaders to assess and enhance bilateral relations during a new governmental term.
During his visit, Modi is scheduled to arrive in Port Louis on March 11, where he will visit the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden to honor Mauritius’ founding figures. He will meet President Dharambeer Gokhool and engage in talks with Prime Minister Ramgoolam, as well as other political leaders. The MoUs will cover areas such as capacity building, trade, and the handling of cross-border financial crimes, while also promoting SMEs.
