A recent study conducted in Ghana highlights the resilience of young farmers in the face of climate change challenges. Despite a high youth unemployment rate of 13.9% and more than 50% underemployment, the agricultural sector remains a viable opportunity. Notably, the average age of farmers in Ghana has reached 55, indicating a need for younger participants.
Research involving 511 young Ghanaians demonstrates that adverse weather events such as floods, droughts, and heat do not significantly deter engagement in agriculture. Instead, positive sentiments about climate and the utilization of innovative agricultural technologies enhance interest, with 76.7% of youth expressing a preference for farming.
Furthermore, access to land and the involvement of urban youth contribute positively to agricultural participation. The study recommends reimagining farming as a modern, technology-driven career and suggests the establishment of training centers to better attract and support aspiring young farmers.
