Fishing Ban at Lake Chivero Continues Amidst Investigation of Fish Deaths

The fishing ban at Lake Chivero remains until investigations into fish deaths are completed. Pollution and industrial discharge have been blamed for wildlife fatalities. ZimParks indicates improvements in water quality but maintains the ban. Efforts to rehabilitate the lake’s ecosystem are ongoing, along with research into biological remediation techniques.

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has confirmed that the fishing ban at Lake Chivero will continue until investigations into the recent fish deaths are concluded. This prohibition was enacted last December after various wildlife and livestock were found dead due to contaminated water in the lake.

Environmental activists attribute these fatalities to untreated waste and industrial discharges from urban areas in Harare. Mr. Tinashe Farawo, a ZimParks spokesperson, mentioned that despite improvements in the aquatic conditions due to favorable rainfall, the fishing ban remains effective while awaiting further test results from a dedicated committee.

The issues affecting Lake Chivero are attributed to heavy pollution, overfishing, and harmful fishing techniques, all of which have severely damaged aquatic species and their environments. In addition to the fishing ban, research is ongoing into biological remediation methods aimed at rehabilitating contaminated lake areas.

Originally called Lake McIlwaine, Lake Chivero was constructed in 1952 to supply water to the city of Harare, underscoring its importance in the region’s ecosystem and water supply.

The fishing ban at Lake Chivero remains in effect as investigations into the causes of fish deaths continue. Pollution, overfishing, and destructive practices have severely impacted the lake’s environment. In light of these challenges, ZimParks is exploring remediation techniques to restore the lake’s ecosystem while ensuring public health and safety through ongoing research and monitoring.
