Steve Witkoff, serving as the Special Envoy to the Middle East under President Donald Trump, has confirmed forthcoming negotiations between Ukrainian and US delegations concerning the Russo-Ukrainian war. These discussions are set to occur next week in Saudi Arabia, with Witkoff noting his previous experience in talks with Russian officials.
Witkoff expressed optimism regarding the encouragement from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Trump, labeling it a “positive first step” following their previous encounter at the White House. While preparations for the meeting are ongoing in Riyadh, Witkoff mentioned that it might be held in Jeddah, emphasizing the flexibility in the chosen city.
Efforts are underway in Washington to establish a framework aimed at fostering a peace agreement and an initial ceasefire for Ukraine. An anonymous Ukrainian official indicated that Andrii Yermak, the Head of the Office of the President, will lead the Ukrainian delegation, potentially accompanied by Defence Minister Rustem Umierov.
On the US side, the anticipated participants include Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and Witkoff himself. Media sources have reported that the meeting is set for Wednesday, March 12.
