Sudan has filed a case against the UAE at the ICJ for enabling genocide against the Masalit by supporting the RSF. The UAE is accused of various human rights violations, which it denies. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties and displacement, raising urgent humanitarian concerns.
Sudan initiated legal proceedings against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on allegations of complicity in genocide against the Masalit people in West Darfur. The accusations stem from the UAE’s extensive support for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, which Sudan claims has committed numerous human rights violations.
The allegations from Sudan detail actions including genocide, murder, theft, rape, forced displacements, vandalism, and violations of human rights committed against the Masalit community since at least 2023. The case emphasizes UAE’s financial, political, and military backing of the RSF and its affiliated groups.
Sudan’s filing seeks immediate ICJ intervention, urging the court to compel the UAE to prevent further acts identified in Article II of the Genocide Convention. These acts include killing and inflicting severe harm on the Masalit population.
In response to the allegations, the UAE rejected the claims, countering that they have not supplied arms to the RSF, which has been in conflict with Sudanese forces since April 2023. The ongoing conflict has resulted in over 20,000 deaths and displaced approximately 14 million people.
As the conflict escalates, international calls are intensifying for a ceasefire, given the severe humanitarian crisis threatening millions with famine and death due to food shortages. The warfare has now affected 13 of Sudan’s 18 states, underscoring the widespread impact of the conflict.
Sudan has lodged a comprehensive case against the UAE at the ICJ, alleging involvement in genocide through support of the RSF militia. While Sudan insists on the need for urgent measures to protect the Masalit people, the UAE denies these allegations. The ongoing conflict poses severe humanitarian threats, prompting international calls for intervention.
