UN Urges Accountability for Human Rights Violations in Central African Republic

The UN is urging accountability for human rights violations in CAR, following reports of grave abuses by armed groups. A rise in violence resulted in multiple deaths, particularly affecting Muslim communities and refugees. The UN emphasizes the need for transparency regarding the military’s ties to these groups and the importance of protecting human rights.

The United Nations has called for accountability regarding human rights violations in the Central African Republic (CAR) following new reports of serious abuses by armed groups. A report from the Human Rights Office and the UN mission, MINUSCA, outlines the necessity of preventing similar violations in the future. Recent attacks in the Mbomou and Haut-Mbomou prefectures resulted in at least 24 deaths, some from summary executions.

The armed group known as WTA, previously linked to Azandé Ani Kpi Gbé, has been implicated in these attacks. The UN’s Thameen Al-Kheetan stated that both armed groups and forces affiliated with the national army committed severe rights violations, particularly against Muslim communities and Sudanese refugees. Victims have faced acts such as sexual violence, forced labor, and torture, alongside widespread looting.

Al-Kheetan emphasized the need to hold perpetrators accountable for these egregious crimes, highlighting the UN’s commitment in collaborating with CAR authorities to uphold human rights and combat impunity. Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, stressed the importance of clarifying the connection between the WTA group and the military, recommending disarmament if transparency cannot be achieved.

Ongoing instability has afflicted CAR for decades, contributing to violence driven by ethnic and religious tensions. UN assessments reveal that conflicts have displaced one in five individuals within the country, damaging essential infrastructure such as schools and hospitals. In response, MINUSCA has ramped up measures to protect civilians and reinforce governmental authority in impacted areas.

The UN is pushing for accountability in the Central African Republic due to alarming reports of human rights violations by armed groups. The situation demands immediate attention to prevent further atrocities and restore stability in the region. Enhanced support for the protection of civilians and a commitment to disarmament and transparency are crucial moving forward.
