Jason Gillespie Quits Pakistan Cricket Role, Accuses Aaqib Javed of Undermining

Jason Gillespie resigned as Pakistan’s test coach, citing undermining by interim head coach Aaqib Javed. Gillespie expressed dissatisfaction with the internal dynamics, while Aaqib acknowledged the negative effects of frequent coaching changes. Their interaction illustrates broader challenges within Pakistan cricket management, especially after the team’s recent failures.

Jason Gillespie, the former test coach of Pakistan cricket, revealed he felt undermined before resigning from his position last December. In a social media post, he labeled Aaqib Javed, the interim head coach, as a “clown.” Gillespie, who boasts a distinguished playing career with 71 test matches and 97 ODI appearances for Australia, was appointed last April but left less than eight months later following disappointing performance outcomes.

Gillespie’s resignation coincided with South African Gary Kirsten’s departure as the limited-overs coach, making him the second foreign coach to exit Pakistan’s cricket setup within two months. Aaqib, who is also the national selector, admitted that constant changes in coaching and selection have negatively impacted the team’s consistency and performance.

Acknowledging these challenges, Aaqib stated, “We have changed nearly 16 coaches and 26 selectors in the last two years or so… until you get consistency right from the top down, your team will not progress.” His comments came after Pakistan’s inability to qualify for the knockout stage of the Champions Trophy.

In response to Aaqib’s remarks, Gillespie expressed his views through an Instagram story, calling the situation “hilarious” and stated, “Aaqib was clearly undermining Gary and I behind the scenes campaigning to be the coach in all formats.” Following Kirsten’s exit, Aaqib has continued in his role, and though his contract was initially for the Champions Trophy, he is expected to serve until a permanent replacement is found.

Jason Gillespie’s resignation as coach of Pakistan’s cricket team highlights issues of instability within the coaching structure, including claims of internal undermining by interim coach Aaqib Javed. Aaqib acknowledges the need for consistency in coaching staff to enhance the team’s performance. Gillespie criticized this instability and Aaqib’s behavior, noting his ongoing influence amidst a tumultuous management period for Pakistani cricket.
