Morocco Embraces Rainfall After Drought: A Weather Turnaround in March

Morocco is experiencing significant rainfall after a prolonged drought, marking a notable change in weather patterns. Following months of dry conditions, meteorologists predict rainy weather throughout March as shifting pressure systems allow precipitation. The weekend will see heavy rain and strong winds in various regions, particularly in central areas, marking a welcome change after an unusually dry winter.

After a prolonged drought, Morocco is welcoming significant rain across various regions, marking a drastic change in weather patterns. This shift follows months of elevated temperatures and an unprecedented lack of rainfall.

Houcine Youabed, Head of Communications at the General Directorate of Meteorology, indicated that Morocco is experiencing a notable seasonal transition. The changes stem from a weakening high-pressure system, allowing meteorologists to predict rain and ongoing weather disturbances throughout March.

Youabed explained that previously, the high-pressure system obstructed rain from reaching Morocco, but now, low-pressure systems are entering. These systems have brought thunderstorms and snowfall to various areas, particularly in the northern and central regions, with heavy precipitation expected on Thursday.

On Friday, a brief improvement in weather conditions is anticipated, but another low-pressure system will arrive over the weekend, bringing substantial rainfall on Saturday and Sunday across most of the country along with strong coastal winds.

The central regions are already experiencing rainfall, which is expected to intensify through the weekend, especially in the Marrakech and Souss areas. The current precipitation contrasts sharply with December and January when the Azores High limited low-pressure systems from reaching Morocco. Meanwhile, countries in Europe such as Portugal received significant rain during that period.

Morocco is experiencing a significant shift in weather as rainfall returns after a prolonged drought. This change is attributed to the weakening of a high-pressure system, allowing low-pressure systems to bring thunderstorms and heavy precipitation. Expected rainfall across the northern and central regions, especially over the upcoming weekend, marks a crucial improvement in Morocco’s climate conditions, contrasting sharply with earlier months.
