Jaishankar highlighted India’s $4 billion support for Sri Lanka amid its economic crisis, emphasizing that neighboring countries should recognize mutual responsibilities. He commented on India’s evolving global role and faced protests after his speech, raising concerns over security during public events.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed Sri Lanka’s recent economic challenges, highlighting India’s substantial support for recovery. At Chatham House in London, he noted the Indian government’s provision of over $4 billion in aid during Sri Lanka’s 2022 financial crisis, significantly surpassing the IMF’s assistance.
Jaishankar remarked, “When Sri Lanka had a very serious financial crisis, while the rest of the world largely sat on its hands, we actually came forward with a package of more than $4 billion, which was almost twice the size of the IMF package.” He underscored India’s role as a generous partner, but also pointed out the necessity for mutual recognition of interests between neighboring countries.
Additionally, he emphasized that while India holds a larger economy and tends to offer non-reciprocal support, there are reciprocal expectations in regional relations. He stated, “I think, just like we have a responsibility to our neighbours, our neighbours also have a responsibility to us.”
During the event, Jaishankar also discussed India’s evolving position in global matters, linking recent shifts in the U.S. government to the trend towards a multipolar world.
Following the speech, Jaishankar faced disruptions from pro-Khalistan protesters, with one individual tearing the Indian flag in front of police officers who did not intervene, marking the incident as concerning.
In conclusion, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar articulated India’s significant financial support to Sri Lanka during its crisis while urging for greater mutual respect between neighboring nations. His remarks reflect India’s commitment to regional stability, alongside a call for understanding and recognition of interests. Additionally, the protests he faced after the event highlighted ongoing geopolitical tensions.
