Jaishankar Discusses Kashmir Resolution and International Relations

EAM S. Jaishankar addressed the Kashmir issue stating that most issues are resolved, pending the return of territory under Pakistani occupation. He discussed broader topics such as India’s economic strategy, the dollar’s influence, and multipolarity trends under the Trump administration, indicating a strategic alignment with India’s interests.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the Kashmir issue, highlighting steps taken by India to resolve it, such as the abrogation of Article 370, which he considers pivotal. He noted restoration of economic growth, social justice, and the successful holding of elections with high voter turnout as subsequent significant milestones. He emphasized that a key remaining concern is the return of the portion of Kashmir currently under illegal Pakistani occupation, asserting that the situation would be considered resolved once this is addressed.

During his comments at the Chatham House event in London, Jaishankar also touched on various international topics, including India’s relationship with China, the rupee’s potential international role, and the significance of the U.S. dollar in global economics. He stated, “I don’t think there’s any policy on our part to replace the dollar,” reaffirming that the dollar’s status as a reserve currency is crucial for maintaining international economic stability.

Jaishankar further discussed the diverse positions within the BRICS nations regarding the role of the dollar, clarifying that there is no unified stance against it. He stated that while multipolarity is growing, it does not necessarily mean there will be an immediate shift to currency multipolarity.

Regarding U.S. foreign policy, he noted that the Trump administration’s movement toward multipolarity aligns with India’s interests. He highlighted the cooperation in the Quad alliance between the U.S., India, Australia, and Japan, praising the fair contribution model within it, which ensures no member is a free rider. Jaishankar concluded this section by stating that agreements for a bilateral trade pact between the U.S. and India are in progress.

In summary, EAM S. Jaishankar outlines key advancements in resolving the Kashmir issue, with significant attention on the ongoing challenges posed by its occupation. He emphasizes economic stability connected to the dollar, while also acknowledging the multipolar shift in global politics that aligns with India’s strategic interests. The Quad partnership is highlighted as an effective model of collaboration that supports equitable contributions among member nations.
