Kenya Met Department Forecasts End to High Temperatures with Upcoming Rains

Kenya is currently experiencing unusually high temperatures, typical before the long rains. Dr. Gikungu forecasts rainfall beginning next week, which will lead to lowered temperatures. However, areas like the Highlands East of the Rift Valley may see below-average rainfall during the upcoming season.

Dr. David Gikungu, Director of the Kenya Meteorological Department, has confirmed that the high temperatures currently being experienced in Kenya are a typical precursor to the upcoming long rainy season. Since December, temperatures have peaked at 32°C in the highland areas, such as Nairobi and Kiambu, with several regions recording highs above 36°C.

In summary, Dr. Gikungu highlights the natural cycle of seasonal temperatures leading into the long rains, emphasizing the role of solar movement in this process. The anticipated rains starting next week will help reduce these elevated temperatures, though some regions may still experience near-to-below-average rainfall during the March-April-May season.
