Madagascar Sees Severe Impact from Tropical Storm Honde, Urgent Response Underway

Tropical Storm Honde struck Madagascar on March 2, resulting in three deaths, over 69 injuries, and displacing approximately 21,600 people mainly in the Toliara, Belo sur Tsiribihina, and Ampanihy districts. The storm caused severe damage to homes and schools, leading to disrupted classes. Humanitarian efforts are focused on search and rescue, food distribution, and health support as the government leads the response while facing a critical need for resources to address ongoing challenges during cyclone season.

Tropical Storm Honde impacted Madagascar on March 2, affecting the south-western coast, particularly Toliara, Belo sur Tsiribihina, and Ampanihy districts. Initial reports indicate three fatalities, one missing person, and at least 69 injuries. Around 21,600 individuals have been displaced, with significant infrastructure damage including over 7,200 homes affected, 913 damaged, and 1,924 destroyed. Schools in the region faced extensive damage, hindering the resumption of classes.

As Honde moves southeast and away from Madagascar, it is losing its impact on inhabited areas according to Météo France. The storm originally developed in the southern Mozambique Channel, intensifying into a tropical storm by February 26. Prior adverse weather conditions had already caused flooding and displacement, particularly between February 14-19.

The emergency response involves humanitarian coordination led by the government. Search and rescue operations have been executed, including helicopter rescues of stranded individuals in Androka Commune. Partners have provided essential supplies such as food, hygiene kits, and medical aid, including 30 metric tons of rice distributed to the Ampanihy District.

Further coordination meetings were held by the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) to strategize the response efforts. Agencies are mapping available supplies and coordinating with local authorities to funnel resources where needed. Due to previous responses to Cyclone Dikeledi and now Honde, humanitarian stocks are running low as the cyclone season continues until April.

Ongoing needs have been identified, and partners are advocating for additional resources to replenish supplies. As the cyclone season peaks, further assessments and evaluations will assist in addressing the immediate needs of affected populations and bolstering disaster response efforts for future events.

Tropical Storm Honde has caused significant displacement and infrastructure damage across southern Madagascar, prompting a coordinated emergency response. With reports of casualties and extensive property damage, humanitarian efforts are underway to assist those affected. Key agencies are mobilizing resources and support, though additional assistance is required to sustain ongoing relief efforts amid the cyclone season.
