UN Climate Chief Simon Stiell is visiting Nigeria for talks on climate action, aiming to foster collaborations among government officials, businesses, and civil organizations. His engagements include a speech on the economic benefits of Nigeria’s new climate plan and discussions on environmental protection strategies.
Simon Stiell, the Executive Secretary of the UN Climate Change (UNFCCC), is set to visit Nigeria for four days to discuss the potentials of Nigeria’s climate strategy with government leaders, business figures, civil society, and other critical stakeholders. His visit aims to strengthen partnerships in response to climate change and promote economic opportunities through robust climate action.
Stiell will commence his trip in Abuja on March 4-5, where he will meet with key government officials. Following this, he will attend a symposium titled “Intersecting Worlds of Climate Change, Mangrove, and Art” on March 6 at the Lekki Conservation Centre in Lagos, organized by the National Council on Climate Change Secretariat (NCCCS).
During the symposium, Stiell will deliver a speech at approximately 10:05 am (WAT) highlighting the potential economic benefits stemming from Nigeria’s new climate plan, also referred to as Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). This address will be accessible to the media between 09:00 and 14:00, as he emphasizes the role of bold climate initiatives in alleviating poverty and ensuring universal energy access.
The Executive Secretary will underscore the importance of climate plans in boosting key sectors of Nigeria’s economy, suggesting that these plans can yield significant advantages for households and businesses alike. He will discuss how environmental protection is crucial for enhancing Nigeria’s resilience to climate-induced extreme weather, ultimately safeguarding lives and livelihoods.
Additionally, Stiell will engage in discussions on preserving mangrove forests, which shield coastal regions from flooding, and promote initiatives like the Great Green Wall in the Sahel to restore degraded lands. His efforts emphasize a clear pathway for Nigeria to adapt to the challenges posed by climate change.
On March 7, Stiell is set to meet with representatives from civil society, continuing his dialogues on climate resilience and sustainable development. The UNFCCC, which oversees the Paris Climate Change Agreement and the Kyoto Protocol, aims to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations at levels that prevent detrimental impacts on climate systems, ensuring sustainable development for future generations.
