A North Korean soldier captured in Ukraine has expressed his desire to defect to South Korea. During a recent conversation with South Korean lawmaker Rep. Yu Yong-weon, the soldier, identified only by his surname Ri, expressed hopes of living freely in Seoul. He asked Yu if he could live with rights and whether he would be able to reunite with his parents and receive medical treatment for his injuries.
Ri, who sustained serious wounds, notably struggled to articulate his words. His questions reflected a longing for a life where he could build a home and start a family. “If I go to (South) Korea, will I be able to live as I wish with the rights I hope for?” he inquired.
In a related interview, the South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo reported on Ri’s intentions and noted that the South Korean government is prepared to offer him protection and support if he opts to relocate. In contrast, another captured soldier, surnamed Paek, indicated he needed more time to consider defection.
The captured North Korean soldier’s request for asylum in South Korea underscores the complexities of defection from oppressive regimes. His desire for a life with freedoms and rights highlights the stark contrasts between North and South Korea. Meanwhile, South Korean authorities have signaled readiness to assist him if he chooses to seek refuge in the south. These incidents also raise concerns about the treatment and fate of other captured North Korean soldiers.
