Kenneth Okonkwo met with Atiku Abubakar to discuss Nigeria’s political future after leaving the Labour Party. Okonkwo emphasized the need for cooperation among Nigerians to restore the country’s greatness. He criticized Obi’s leadership, expressing disappointment in the Labour Party’s direction, and remains open to discussions for future political moves.
Kenneth Okonkwo, the former spokesperson for the Labour Party’s Presidential Campaign, recently had a meeting with Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate from the last election. Okonkwo, an actor and politician who once actively supported Peter Obi, shared details of this meeting on his Instagram account, highlighting its importance for Nigeria’s future.
In his post, Okonkwo expressed gratitude for the invitation from Atiku, stating, “It’s a privilege and honour to be invited by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar for a consultative meeting on how best to chart a new course for our beloved country.” He emphasized the need for cooperation among Nigerians to restore the nation to greatness.
This meeting follows Okonkwo’s resignation from the Labour Party, which he attributed to Obi’s inability to transform the party into a competitive political entity. He criticized the current leadership in Nigeria, referring to them as “kakistocrats and kleptocrats,” and called for the establishment of a politically robust grassroots party to challenge the status quo.
Reflecting on his departure from the Labour Party, Okonkwo noted that he, along with many Nigerians, had high expectations for its growth post-2023 elections. However, he expressed disappointment, stating, “I believed that Peter Obi would seize the momentum and build a solid party of integrity… However, I continued in his defence believing he would still privately bring the needed solution to LP problems, (but) to no avail.”
Despite criticizing the Labour Party, Okonkwo has mentioned having no plans to join either the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or the All Progressives Congress (APC). He remains open to discussions with individuals who share similar perspectives for shaping his political future, which has led to speculation about potential new alliances following this meeting.
Kenneth Okonkwo’s recent meeting with Atiku Abubakar highlights a shift in his political engagement post-Labour Party. Although he has resigned from the LP, expressing disappointment in its leadership, he seeks collaboration to address Nigeria’s challenges. His openness to consultations could indicate future political realignments as he navigates his next steps in the political landscape.
