Alhaji Asoma Abu Banda was a prominent businessman, entrepreneur, and philanthropist born in June 1933 in Kintampo, Ghana. He aimed to create economic opportunities for many individuals globally. After elementary schooling in Kintampo and Kumasi, he pursued further education in London, earning certifications in Marketing and Sales Management along with additional training in various business fields.
With a strong business background, Alhaji Banda started working with his family’s transport business early in life. From 1955 to 1957, he was involved in purchasing and transporting cattle from Mali and Burkina Faso to Kumasi. This experience inspired his entrepreneurial spirit and hard work ethic, leading him to further his education in London in 1960.
He became a Director at Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in London, overseeing Africa and the Middle East. In 1975, Alhaji Banda co-founded a shipping company, OT Africa Line, and the Antrak Group, which became successful under his leadership, establishing 146 branches and employing over half a million people globally.
As Chairman of Antrak Air, he pioneered Ghana’s first fully Ghanaian-owned airline. His commitment to Ghana’s socio-economic development was evident through various initiatives, including financing significant hospital renovations and investing in the Tema Container Terminal, which created numerous jobs. He also founded the Crime Prevention Foundation to assist local security services.
Every year, Alhaji Banda created over 3,000 jobs and constructed a mosque in Accra. His significant contributions earned him several prestigious awards, including being the first African to own both a ship and an aircraft. He was honored multiple times for his lifetime achievement in the maritime industry.
Banda served on various boards, including the Ghana Port and Harbours Authority, and played a prominent role in politics, helping establish the People’s Convention Party and later merging it into the Great Alliance. He also held positions on boards such as Ghana Airways and Cal Bank Ltd and was Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba.
Recently, Alhaji Banda passed away, as announced by Dele Momodu, a close family associate. Condolences were offered to his family during this difficult time, marking the end of a remarkable life dedicated to business, philanthropy, and public service.
