South Sudan Rebels Accuse Army of Aggressive Attacks in South Kordofan

In South Kordofan, rebels accused the army of attacking their positions while deadly shelling occurred. The SPLM-N stated it repelled army advances, resulting in heavy losses for the troops. The conflict has led to numerous civilian casualties and extensive humanitarian crises, further exacerbated by ongoing military actions.

On Tuesday, Sudan rebel forces accused the army of launching attacks on their positions in South Kordofan, coinciding with deadly shelling blamed on the rebels. The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), led by Abdel Aziz al-Hilu, reported that army forces targeted areas it controls near Kadugli, attempting to seize these territories. The SPLM-N claimed they successfully repelled the assault, causing substantial losses to army troops.

The SPLM-N’s statement indicated that fighting occurred in populated regions, with army troops advancing alongside civilians to secure rebel-held areas. The conflict, which includes clashes with both the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has persisted throughout their nearly two-year war. While Kadugli remains under army control, SPLM-N retains areas in the surrounding mountains and parts of the Blue Nile state.

The rebel group alleged that on Thursday, the army dispatched troops 36 kilometers from Kadugli, establishing positions in the nearby mountains. Shelling of SPLM-N-controlled areas began on Saturday, displacing civilians amid the violence. Medical sources reported that artillery strikes on Kadugli resulted in at least 40 fatalities on Monday, further worsening the humanitarian situation.

South Kordofan Governor Mohamed Ibrahim attributed the shelling incidents to the SPLM-N, alleging that an attack targeted a local market. The ongoing conflict in Sudan has resulted in tens of thousands of fatalities, the displacement of over 12 million people, and has created unprecedented humanitarian challenges.

The conflict in Sudan, particularly in the South Kordofan region, has been marked by violent confrontations between government forces and various rebel groups. The SPLM-N, which controls significant territories in South Kordofan, has engaged in continuous skirmishes against the Sudanese army and the RSF. This instability has led to widespread deaths and displacements, creating a dire humanitarian crisis classified as one of the worst in history by organizations such as the International Rescue Committee.

The recent military activities in South Kordofan highlight the ongoing violent struggle between the SPLM-N and Sudanese army, contributing to an escalating humanitarian disaster. With recent shelling and military advancements, the conflict showcases the dire implications for civilians caught in the crossfire. The tension between these factions continues to put immense pressure on the region, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention and resolution.
