CARICOM Delegation Supports Stability and Democracy Efforts in Haiti

CARICOM is actively addressing Haiti’s crisis, focusing on creating stability and supporting Haitian-led solutions ahead of proposed elections. Haiti faces severe challenges from gang violence, which threatens democracy and safety. CARICOM’s Secretary General is set to present a UN proposal to tackle these pressing issues comprehensively.

At the recent 48th Regular Meeting of CARICOM, St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew emphasized CARICOM’s dedication to ensuring a secure future for Haiti. He stated that the goal is to foster stability and support the nation in preparing for elections, highlighting that any solutions must be Haitian-led.

Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, underscored the importance of international cooperation in achieving lasting democratic change for Haiti. He expressed urgency in addressing the nation’s instability, suggesting that current conditions are unsustainable.

Haiti continues to grapple with severe unrest, marked by the pervasive influence of armed gangs that have caused widespread violence, kidnappings, and disruptions in essential services. CARICOM Secretary General Dr. Carla Barnett announced plans to submit a report to the United Nations aimed at addressing Haiti’s crisis and its root causes.

Dr. Barnett’s proposal includes recommendations for the UN to manage necessary forces’ logistical and structural expenses, funded through an existing trust. This plan aims to effectively combat gang violence.

Emphasizing the dire humanitarian impact, Dr. Barnett remarked, “The gangs are inflicting intolerable suffering on desperate and frightened people.” CARICOM remains committed to fostering democracy in Haiti, emphasizing that any elections must be determined by the Haitian people. While elections are scheduled for November 2025, concerns persist about their feasibility given the current situation.

The 48th Regular Meeting of CARICOM reinforced the organization’s commitment to restoring stability in Haiti through Haitian-led solutions and international cooperation. The persistent violence from armed gangs necessitates urgent intervention, with proposed plans aiming to engage the United Nations in providing support. The emphasis remains on democratic governance, with upcoming elections highlighting the need for secure conditions for the Haitian people.
